HYDROGEN
Hydrogen: an essential energy driver to reach carbon neutrality targets of 2050

Hydrogen is an essential energy driver to reach European carbon neutrality targets of 2050

Green hydrogen lies at the heart of the EU decarbonization strategy. This form of hydrogen is obtained through water electrolysis with the use of electrolyzers powered by renewable energy.

The EU strategy goal is to produce 10 million tones green hydrogen by 2030, making up to 14% of EU energy mix within 2050.

Puglia Green Hydrogen Valley

This project is under development and involves big national corporations in the sector, notably Edison, Snam and Alboran Hydrogen. The construction of three plants for hydrogen production in the Apulian Brindisi, Taranto and Cerignola (Foggia) areas reaching an overall capacity of 220 MW and powered by a photovoltaic plant of 380 MW. The Puglia Green Hydrogen Valley is one of the first national green hydrogen projects on a large scale and will contribute reaching EU targets for carbon neutrality of 2050, by which green hydrogen is expected to play a crucial role.

Producing steel with green hydrogen: the agreement between Edison, Snam and Tenaris

Edison, Tenaris and Snam launched a joint program aimed at decarbonizing part of the production processes of Tenaris steel company by introducing green hydrogen in substitution to natural gas. Green hydrogen will be supplied by a 20-MW-electrolyzer powered by renewable sources.

The whole project will enable Tenaris to reduce massive CO2 amounts coming from steel production and represents a unique case of green hydrogen application in Italian steel manufacturing.

JRP (Joint Research Platform) – Hydrogen from Milan’s Politecnico

JRP stands for Joint Research Platform between universities and corporations with the mission of further exploring subjects related to hydrogen. The platform was created in 2021 by the Fondazione Politecnico di Milano together with the university and private funders, notably Edison, Eni, Snam, A2A and NextChem (Maire Tecnimont group). The privates panel now includes also other corporations and enterprises.

Starting by the assumption that hydrogen will accompany renewable electricity production in the future energy scenario, JRP is paving the way to the construction of a national hydrogen chain.

Moreover, JRP is developing so-said vertical research projects, focused on technologies or tools related to hydrogen production, with the goal of creating awareness on hydrogen as a carrier for energy transition.

Research on hydrogen

Our research activities on hydrogen are developed along two main lines: one is on its application in the short run, the other on new technologies and possible evolutions in the supply in a longer term.

Tech scouting lies at the core of our research, and it’s implemented by working side by side with developers and taking into account present literature on the discipline. Alongside scouting, we foster direct experimentation of technologies to obtain firsthand information for daily activities.

The Hydrogen Lab at our Officine Edison in Turin is the headquarter of all corporate research, the lab hosts two stations for the testing of small-scale electrolyzers for future possible industrial applications.
