Conceiving a sustainable future in which solar energy can be stored in a battery and become available when needed province of Cosenza: a new 882 KWh storage system in Altomonte, Cosenza area
Thanks to a partnership with Electro Power Systems (EPS), Edison enters the market segment to test battery capability to replace fluctuant supply from renewables.
The Altomonte system
The storage system gathers the energy produced in the Altomonte solar plant and makes it available when needed to compensate intermittence in power from renewables and gaps between production forecasts and outcomes.
Such storage systems, in combination with solar plants or windmills, optimize energy production from renewables, overpassing their non-programmable nature.
An immense power bank charged by the Calabrian sun
The new storage battery installed in Altomonte, in the Cosenza area, stocks energy in excess from solar plants nearby and dispatches it on overcast days, balancing energy demand and offer.
In short, a power bank with unusual dimensions: big as a truck and heavy as an elephant!

The photovoltaic power bank in numbers
The Altomonte system is perfectly integrated with the surrounding territory and hosts a 12-meter-long container and 5.5 tones weight. It is composed of 108 lithium-ion battery modules and has an overall power of 500 KW.
"The Altomonte storage system is an innovative project, allowing Edison to reinforce its know-how on battery facility management. The goal is to study and gain knowledge about this world and develop adequate business models for the market."
